What Does "M&A Finance at Google" Actually Mean?
My LinkedIn title says "M&A Finance at Google" but I realize most people probably wonder what that actually means day to day.

Finance isn't just for people who studied finance in undergrad. It's for people who are curious, committed, and willing to do the work.
Leverage Your Current Strengths — Finance is broad: investment banking, asset management, FP&A, venture capital, strategy, risk. Start with what you're already good at. Are you analytical? Great with people? Obsessed with how businesses work? There's a finance lane for you.
Start Where You Know — Target finance roles within your current industry first. If you're a tax accountant at a tech company, it's a much easier leap into FP&A in tech than healthcare or energy. Your industry knowledge is a competitive advantage.
Get Credentialed Strategically — Certifications like the CPA, CFA, or FMVA send a clear message that you are serious. You don't even need to finish them — just starting with one level or section shows intent.
Consider an MBA as a Strategic Reset — An MBA allows you to hit the reset button on your career. For me, it gave me the time and network to pivot into investment banking. But more than that, it gave me permission to rewrite my story.
Craft Your Narrative — Your resume doesn't need to scream "finance." It just needs to show that you can think like finance. Highlight leadership. Show initiative. Quantify your impact even in non-finance roles. Make your story make sense.
Network with Purpose — Talk to people in the roles you're aiming for. Ask about their path. Learn how they think. Most people are more generous than you think, especially when your ask is thoughtful and specific.
Finance needs diverse perspectives. It needs people who can problem-solve, analyze, communicate, and lead.
Success in finance isn't about where you started — it's about your drive, your strategy, and your execution.
